Huis Zypendaal
: Arnhem’s
premier country estate Huis Zypendaal in Arnhem is one of the seven castles open to the public managed by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen. The people of Arnhem like to refer to Huis Zypendaal as a ‘little castle’. But it is actually a magnificent country estate with outbuildings and a garden set in a green stream valley. It was built between 1762 and 1764 for the prominent Brantsen family, regents of Arnhem. The house stands on the site of older buildings dating from the 17th century. Only parts of the original garden layout have survived.
The main floor is furnished as a museum, featuring items from the original household contents, including a collection of family portraits of the Brantsen family. Some of the house’s interior decoration still dates from the 18th century. One example is the remarkable marble floor in the hallway, inlaid with a chain motif. Opposite Zypendaal House stand a beautiful orangery and a coach house, where plants used to be overwintered and horses were stabled. Both buildings are now used as offices. Between the orangery and the coach house lies an ornamental garden.
The gardens and park are a lovely combination of the formal ‘French’ style and the romantic ‘English’ landscape style. The park surrounding Zypendaal House is home to imposing trees. You’ll also find lawns adorned with rhododendrons, springs, streams and ponds. The ponds are home to birds such as the kingfisher and the grey wagtail. It’s a lovely place to go for a walk, walk the dog, have a picnic or relax on a bench.
Sonsbeek Park, within walking distance, has cafés and restaurants, and Arnhem city centre is nearby.
